Detail information about job Satellite Oceanographer. Terms and conditions vacancy

4 Years Fixed Term, Full Time

About the role:

We seek a talented and enthusiastic scientist to join the Satellite Oceanography subgroup at NOC in Southampton. This post is part of the newly funded Global Challenges Research Fund project SOLSTICE, which aims to promote applications of satellite data for marine and coastal monitoring and research to support sustainable use of living marine resources in the countries of the Western Indian Ocean (WIO).

You will support a number of scientific case studies that use satellite data with other observations and model output to improve understanding and management of marine environments and living resources. You will work with UK and WIO researchers to understand the temporal and spatial variability of parameters that influence ecosystem dynamics in the WIO region.

Although the emphasis at the beginning of the project is on analysis of archive satellite data from the region, you will be expected to contribute to a wide variety of case studies, publish results in the peer-reviewed literature as lead author or co-author and to take this opportunity to build knowledge, skills and expertise for an academic career in coastal and marine remote sensing.  Capacity development is an important aspect of the post and you will develop and deliver lectures and hands-on training resources for a regional course in satellite oceanography, produce distance-learning materials for on-line training courses and provide technical support to UK and WIO scientists using satellite data in their research.

This is a Fixed Term Appointment available for four years. The post is offered on NERC terms and conditions and is open to internal and external candidates.

Salary:
