Job DescriptionThe European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Barcelona (Spain), Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton near Cambridge (UK) and Rome (Italy).

We are looking for an enthusiastic web developer to join our IT Services department at EMBL Heidelberg. We maintain and develop the state-of-the-art IT infrastructure for the laboratory and are responsible for providing high quality IT support in different areas to the users at EMBL Heidelberg. You would be part of our Software & Solutions team and would have the following main responsibilities:

• Development and maintenance of the technical infrastructure for the EMBL websites
• Technical integration of the content management system, web apps, database resources and enterprise search
• Provide technical support for this infrastructure to our internal customers
• Requirements engineering by close interaction with stakeholders and the EMBL user community
• Supervise implementation projects that involve external resources

Qualifications and ExperienceYou should have proven professional experience in web development. You should also have experience with Content Management Systems, PHP and PHP frameworks (e.g. Symfony, Laravel or Zend), JavaScript / jQuery / AJAX, HTML, CSS, and XML. An understanding of basic SQL and scripting languages (e.g. Perl, bash, Tcl) would also be beneficial. Good working knowledge in administration of Linux systems, web servers and relational databases would be desirable as well as a background in enterprise search technologies (e.g. Elasticsearch, Solr) and a good sense of user experience design.

As well as technical ability, it is essential that you have a service-oriented attitude and are able to effectively communicate with stakeholders and internal users. The perfect candidate would be a self-motivated person, who works well as part of a team. You should also have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, excellent / good working knowledge of English and enjoy working in a stimulating and international culture.
