Detail information about job Infrastructure Engineer (Linux). Terms and conditions vacancy

IT Services provides IT to the University. We’re about 80 people in a variety of roles from keeping our printers on the road through software development (we have a team of 13 developers), system administrators for over 1,200 hosts running Windows Server and Linux and project management.

We’re a highly skilled team, tech led and introducing new methodologies across all our areas. We use test driven agile development with CI, automate our system administration using Puppet and PowerShell DSC and are moving into AWS. And of course we prefer Slack for chat.

We’re looking for an exceptional Linux infrastructure engineer to join the Systems Group. A self-motivated person who enjoys continuously learning new skills, you’ll be part of the team that provides the infrastructure support for the work of the rest of IT Services, working on large scale systems administration and automation for both on-premises and cloud based infrastructure.

We have over 1,000 virtual machines running on VMware vSphere and use VMware’s network virtualisation platform NSX, over 200 physical hosts providing services and HPC facilities (with another 200 HPC nodes to come) and ~2.5PB of storage on NetApp and Dell Compellent SAN/NAS platforms.

We manage our Linux machines using Puppet, with fully automated VM builds and you’ll use your deep knowledge of Linux administration to drive this area. Like everywhere we have legacy stuff, that you will be instrumental in helping replace. We’re also moving into AWS with Lambda and Serverless. Knowledge of cloud technologies will be an asset, but we will train the right candidate as part of our extensive professional development programme.

The salary will be within the range of £31,604-£38,832 per year on an open contract. This is a full time position (37 hours a week) and is available immediately. A flexi-time scheme operates which allows for flexible working within operational guidelines.

For an information discussion about the role, please contact Arthur Clune, Assistant Director (Infrastructure) at [email protected]

Interview date: 06 October 2017
