Project description

The Institute of Communication and Power Networks at the School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering invites applications for a PhD position in “Control and operation of HVDC technologies in weak or isolated AC systems”.

HVDC technologies are being deployed, or considered, in many areas in the world to support the system operation and stability, while alleviating congestion problems and providing solutions for offshore developments in the multi-area interconnection of renewable energy integration. Due to their high capacity and controllability, HVDC technologies can strongly affect the AC system’s behaviour requiring new solutions to ensure a reliable and secure operation. Thus, there is a strong need to analyse the interaction of these technologies and to design suitable control and operation strategies to support weak or isolated AC systems. The successful candidate will seek to investigate the rich interplay of dynamics, control, optimisation, communication, and uncertainty in such combined AC and DC systems.

Entry requirements

Applications are invited from candidates with or expecting a minimum of a first-class honours degree or equivalent, and/or a Master's degree in a relevant engineering or science degree such as (but not limited to) electrical engineering, control engineering, applied mathematics. We would expect a strong background in systems and control theory, optimisation, and mathematics (relevant coursework or work experience), as well as good programming skills in scientific programming languages (MATLAB, Python, Fortran, C/C++).

If English is not the applicant’s first language, they must provide evidence that you meet the University’s minimum English Language requirements.
