An internally funded PhD Studentship is available within Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU). This is a joint project between the world leading departments of Research Institute for Sport and Exercise Sciences, the department of Nursing and Allied Health and the Departments of Cardiovascular Surgery and Intensive Care at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital. The University has world class facilities and a large network of postgraduate students who all receive a programme of ongoing training and development, including completion of LJMU’s accredited 3is teaching programme.

The studentship will be based at LJMU in the Research Institute for Sport and Exercise Sciences. The PhD will focus on examining the impact of different treatments on cerebral perfusion in neonates and infants with acute respiratory failure. Novel, state of the art equipment will be used to monitor changes in cerebral perfusion and cerebrovascular function, along with longitudinal cognitive neurodevelopmental assessments. The study will be undertaken within the clinical setting, in collaboration with clinicians from Alder hey Children’s Hospital.

The supervisory team will consist: Professor Helen Jones (Professor of Cardiovascular Physiology) who has expertise in measurement of cerebral blood flow and cerebrovascular function; Dr Robyn Lotto (Senior Lecturer and Inspire Research Fellow) with clinical experience in Cardiovascular and ECMO care, as well as expertise in neonatal and child research; and Mr Attilio Lotto (Consultant Congenital Cardiothoracic Surgeon at Alder Hey Hospital) who brings a wealth of clinical knowledge and expertise.
