The School of Health and Social CareThe School of Health & Social Care has an excellent reputation for teaching and research in health and social care. Our academic members of staff (approx. 75) include nurses, other health care professionals, social workers, psychologists and sociologists. The School is run over 2 campuses, based at Southend and Colchester. Academic staff are supported by a team of administrative staff based at both Colchester and Southend campuses.

In October 2015 we were awarded a bronze Athena SWAN award which recognises the commitment the School has toward equality and development of an inclusive culture promoting dignity and respect. The Role and DutiesThe School of Health and Social Care is seeking to appoint a full-time (or two part-time) Senior Lecturer(s) in Occupational Therapy on either an ‘Academic Staff with Education and Research Responsibilities’ (ASER) or an ‘Academic Staff primarily with Education responsibilities’ (ASE) contract. Explanation is given in the published job pack as to the expectations for each of these roles and the support that will be offered to post holders.

The post includes contribution to our Occupational Therapy courses at Colchester campus (these are run at UG and PG level). It is expected that as a senior member of staff you would provide support to the Programme Leads and undertake module leadership. This will require management and administration and some supervision, as well as support, assessment and teaching of students on our existing modules, and generally enhancing our research-led teaching in Occupational Therapy. We have a high reputation for our innovative educational delivery of Occupational Therapy programmes (ranked 12th in the National Student Survey for overall student satisfaction, joint 1st for Employability in the Times Good University Guide, and ranked gold in 2017 for the Teaching Excellence Framework).

For an ASER appointment, duties will also include undertaking research and producing research outputs for publication.

Skills and qualifications requiredApplications are invited from Occupational therapists with current registration with the Health and Care Professions Council with a clear record to practice. A PhD in Occupational Therapy or related discipline; or the expectation of a PhD qualification prior to the start of the appointment is essential for an ASER appointment and desirable for an ASE appointment. Experience as a Practice Educator and support of students in practice settings is also essential.

Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (UKPSF D3) (attained via a recognised higher education teaching qualification, e.g. a postgraduate certificate in HE practice, or by an appropriate accredited process) or the commitment to gain such recognition by the end of their probationary period is also an essential requirement of the post.

In addition for applicants seeking an ASER contract we require evidence of a research agenda, engagement in high-quality research activity, a developing research profile and a track record of excellent-quality publications in internationally recognised, reputable journals (and other media of similar standing) appropriate to career stage and discipline norms.

Applicants should have a strong commitment to team working and to enhancing the contribution of research and education to Occupational Therapy.
