Detail information about job Ocean Modeller. Terms and conditions vacancy

3 Years Fixed Term, Full Time

About the role:

We seek a talented and enthusiastic ocean scientist to join the vibrant Marine Systems Modelling group at NOC in Southampton. This post is part of newly funded Global Challenges Research Fund project SOLSTICE and its key aim is promoting applications of ocean models for sustainable use of living marine resources in the countries of the Western Indian Ocean.

You will support a large number of case studies using high resolution global ocean model NEMO by WIO and UK researchers. You will improve and further develop a website which enables both the extraction and dissemination of subsets of NEMO global ocean model data and the hosting of uploaded media content about this model. This system integrates directly with the JASMIN computational and data storage cluster hosted by STFC at Harwell, UK. You will support capacity development of the Western Indian Ocean (WIO) project partners by enabling access, analysis and visualisation of the high resolution model output. Although at the beginning of the project the emphasis is on technical modelling support, we expect you to actively participate in a wide variety of case studies using outputs of the ocean models.

You will have a strong 1st degree in a numerate discipline, science, engineering, mathematics or equivalent or computational discipline and have the following technical skills:  knowledge of Django; use of python in an operational or ‘deployed’ mode; experience of operating web applications in a Linux environment; use of MySQL or similar databases; experience of system administration of Linux virtual machines; deployment and configuration of web servers, including network interfaces, system and service logging and system monitoring; development of web applications; installation and administration of databases and database servers; experience of installation and configuration of web services in a Linux environment; developing products to customer specifications; delivering products that are version-controlled, well-documented and easily maintained or extended.

In addition, you will have advanced communication skills and abilities and motivation to work with stakeholders and researchers outside of the area of natural sciences. The post will require frequent travel to the countries of the Western Indian Ocean.

Salary:

This is a full time Band 6 position and the starting salary will be between £28,200 to £32,130 per annum and depending upon skills and experience.

What we can offer you:

We offer a competitive remuneration package, including an RCUK pension scheme, 30 days annual leave with a further 14 Public/local days off and free car-parking. Opportunities for further training and development are supported.

About us:

The National Oceanography Centre (NOC), part of the Natural Environment Research Council, is a national research organisation, delivering integrated marine science and technology from the coast to the deep ocean and is one of the top five institutions of its kind in the world.
