Detail information about job Postdoctoral Researcher in the Social Science of Animal Research. Terms and conditions vacancy

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher to work on a 3-year Wellcome Trust funded programme on Animal Research Nexus: Changing Constitutions of Science, Health and Welfare.

The successful candidate will contribute to a project exploring the boundary between animal research and veterinary treatment, and the ethical, regulatory and social challenges faced by the veterinary profession. The transformation of companion animals into experimental subjects offers the potential for new models of disease and treatments for animals and humans, but also raises new questions around the ethics and regulation of veterinary practice. Joining a leading interdisciplinary team working on the social, cultural and ethical dimensions of animal research, the post holder is responsible for carrying out a programme of qualitative research. They will undertake interviews and ethnographic work exploring the implications of new spaces (specifically sites of veterinary practice) within the animal research nexus; contribute to qualitative data analysis, research publications and dissemination; and take part in integrative activities within the wider programme of work.

You must possess (or be in the processing of submitting) a relevant PhD in the social sciences or humanities, demonstrating advanced knowledge of qualitative research methods and an in-depth understanding of different theoretical approaches that can be used to examine the social and ethical dimensions of animal research. You should have excellent skills in qualitative methods, experience in organising, planning and conducting research and be able to demonstrate the ability to work independently. You will be able to present information on research progress and outcomes; communicate complex information, orally, in writing and electronically; and prepare proposals and applications to external bodies. Applicants must have the ability to engage across the different ethical perspectives in animal research and deal with sensitive information. Experience with non-academic stakeholder engagement is desirable.

The appointment will be available for 36 months from 1 January 2018.

Applications for this vacancy are to be made online. You will be required to upload a CV and supporting statement as part of your online application.

The closing date for applications is 12.00 noon on 9 October 2017, and interviews will be held week commencing 23 October 2017.

Please note that the University of Oxford's retirement policy is changing. With effect from October 1 2017, all employees at Grade 8 and above will have a retirement age of 68, and all employees at Grades 6 and 7 will no longer have a set retirement age.
