Detail information about job Research Fellow on Redshift. Terms and conditions vacancy

We are looking for a Research Fellow to investigate the use of 3D printing technology to satellite design and manufacture as part of a European Union Funded research project.

The design process of satellites in the future will have many more imposed constraints and requirements than those that exist today, due to our increasing understanding in the sustainable use of the space environment. Operational satellites in low Earth orbit need to survive in an increasingly harsh debris environment and in an effort to stabilise this environment the manufacturers are being urged to ensure their own satellites do not add to the long term debris population. Satellite manufactures and operators are being asked to comply with specific requirements for the de-orbiting and disposal of their satellites. In order to achieve this, these requirements must be considered at the initial design stages.

The European Union funded research project ‘ReDSHIFT’ (http://redshift-h2020.eu/) aims to tackle this problem by looking at new disruptive technologies. The project consists of a consortium of 13 institutions and companies. Several key research areas have already been identified and the focus for the University of Southampton is the application of 3D printing to spacecraft design.

You will have a PhD* in Aerospace or Material Engineering and an excellent research track record. Further experience of manufacturing, 3D printing, structural analysis, space debris, experimental testing and working within large research consortiums would be advantageous.

*Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

Be a part of the University of Southampton, an institution in the top one per cent of world universities and one of the UK’s top 15 research-intensive universities. We have an international reputation for research, teaching and enterprise activities. You will join one of the UK’s most dynamic centres for engineering and environmental research and education, rated number one in the UK for research power in REF 2014.
