Detail information about job Research Fellow in Synthetic Organic Chemistry. Terms and conditions vacancy

Duration: Fixed term for up to 35 months

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research fellow position in synthetic organic chemistry, working with Dr Richard Grainger in the School of Chemistry at the University of Birmingham on a project entitled “Controlled release of reactive di- and triatomic molecules”.

The Grainger group is interested in the use of peri-substituted dithianaphthalenes and related dichalcogens for the stabilization and generation of reactive intermediates in organic and inorganic chemistry (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2009, 48, 4832-4835; Org. Biomol. Chem. 2011, 9, 2336-2344; Organometallics 2014, 33, 4449-4460; Eur. J. Inorg. Chem., 2015, 3146-3156), including the reactive diatomic sulfur monoxide (Org. Lett. 2001, 3, 3565-3568; J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2011, 113, 5843-5852).This Leverhulme-Trust funded project aims to develop structurally-related organic frameworks capable of releasing sulfur monoxide under milder conditions, and to extend this concept to the generation of other reactive di- and tri-atomic molecules, including the biologically relevant nitroxyl (HNO). The research requires expertise in multi-step organic synthesis, including the handling of air and moisture-sensitive compounds, and associated purification and analytical techniques. Additional expertise in one or more of the following is desirable though not essential: physical organic chemistry, fluorescence spectroscopy, use of molecular probes for live cell imaging, preparation and characterization of transition metal complexes.

Applicants should have a degree in chemistry and a PhD in synthetic organic chemistry, or have at least submitted their thesis prior to taking up the position.

The post is available from October 2017.

Informal enquiries can be made to Dr Richard Grainger ([email protected])

The University is a family-friendly employer and the School of Chemistry welcomes flexible working to suit family or other commitments. The University has on-campus childcare facilities.
