The University of Bristol is looking to appoint an outstanding candidate as Head of School of Physics who can provide inspirational leadership and strategic management within the School.

This is a key academic leadership position within the University of Bristol, supporting the attainment of the University’s vision and overall objectives, and participating in the collective formulation and delivery of the University’s academic strategy. We are looking for a proven track record of excellent partnership working both internally and externally as well as academic excellence within chosen field with the ability to engage, lead and influence across wide range of inter-faculty disciplines. The Head of School will also have a deep commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.

The School of Physics is based in the H.H. Wills Physics Laboratory at the heart of the University of Bristol campus, and is at the forefront of research in the UK physics community. Our world-renowned research areas include: astrophysics; correlated electron systems; device thermography and reliability; materials and devices for energy and communication; nuclear energy and materials; particle physics; quantum information and foundations; quantum photonics; biological, soft and complex matter; nanophotonics and nanophysics; and theoretical physics. There has been substantial investment in facilities for both teaching and research for the School in recent years. The School is one of the most popular for physics undergraduates in the UK, providing a range of three-year BSc and four-year MSci undergraduate degree programmes, some with opportunities for study or placement in institutions worldwide. Postgraduate study is to masters or PhD level including two taught masters’ programmes and four centres for doctoral training, and the School has an excellent reputation for the quality of its postgraduate teaching.

With a population of over 400,000, Bristol is the largest city in the South West and the region’s leading centre for business, culture and education. Bristol was named the best city to live in by the Sunday Times in their ‘Best Places to Live Guide 2017’.
