Newman University is a small institution with an excellent reputation for student support. The University offers initial teacher training, joint and single honours, full and part-time foundation degree courses, and postgraduate courses. 

Student Support services invites applicants for Specialist one to one Study Skills tutors to work primarily with students with Asperger’s Syndrome or on the Autistic Spectrum, but also those with other disabilities and Specific Learning difficulties (other than dyslexia). There are no fixed hours for the role, and hours are not guaranteed as they are subject to DSA funding; the post holder will be required to work during term time only. The hourly rate of pay includes timetabled attendance, payment for other related duties performed outside of timetabled attendance, and holiday pay.

The successful candidate will:

  • Have recent experience of providing 1:1 study skills tuition at HE level to disabled students from a wide variety of backgrounds
  • Be qualified at degree level and with a teaching qualification.
  • Have a qualification (Postgraduate Certificate in supporting people with Autism, or National Autistic Society on-line training modules) and/or extensive experience in working with students with Autism, specific learning difficulties (SpLD), long term health conditions or other disabilities.
  • Have in-depth knowledge of how a student’s disabilities affect particular areas of learning and strategies to effectively develop students skills for autonomous study in the learning environment.
  • The ability to maintain clear accurate records of support sessions, work autonomously and demonstrate equality of opportunity.
