Campus: St Mary’s Campus, Paddington

Researchers in the vaccine epidemiology group (VERG) at Imperial College led by Professor Grassly work on the epidemiology of infectious diseases and the impact of vaccination at the individual (immunogenicity, efficacy) and population level (effectiveness, impact). We are particularly interested in oral vaccines against enteric infections such as poliovirus and rotavirus, their impact on mucosal immunity and why they are less immunogenic in children in low-income countries. We have worked extensively on the epidemiology of poliovirus, contribute to Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) policy and are the WHO collaborating institute on polio data analysis and modelling. Further details about the VERG and group members can be found on our website (goo.gl/WypJgQ).

We are seeking an excellent scientist to lead our research on next-generation sequencing of poliovirus and associated bioinformatic, phylodynamic and epidemiologic analysis. You will work closely with the National Institute of Biological Standards and Control (co-investigator Javier Martin) and with other members of the research group and the Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology (see our website for further details). You will also communicate and meet with task teams from the GPEI and with staff at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. You will spend approximately 25% of your time in the laboratory and 75% in bioinformatic and phylodynamic analysis of data, although there is flexibility in how you split your time. You will also have the opportunity to participate in other research activities within the Pathogen Genomics Laboratory. The post would be especially suited to a laboratory scientist seeking to extend their data analysis and modelling skills or to a scientist or clinician seeking to gain experience in the laboratory.

You will have a MSc (for appointment to Research Assistant) or a PhD (for appointment to Research Associate) in a scientific, quantitative and/or lab-based biomedical subject.

This is a full time, fixed term post available until 14th May 2019 in the first instance.
