Job Purpose

Using specialist skills and expertise to undertake interventive conservation work in a 12 month project to repair and prepare a range of rare books (printed and manuscript, dating from the 12th century onwards) from the 18th century collection of William Hunter for the major international Tercentenary exhibition dedicated to Hunter and his life (opening in September 2018 at The Hunterian and travelling onwards to Yale, 2019).

Main Duties and Responsibilities

To project manage and undertake the full range of specialist and complex interventive work in conserving rare and valuable books and codex manuscripts within the time restrictions of the project, under the direction of the Conservation and Preservation Manager. This includes; rebinding, rebacking, resewing, board reattachments, spine repairs, board consolidation, text block repair to allow the safe display and future preservation of material from the Hunterian Library.

To implement best practice in collection care by providing advice, full documentation, recording photos pre, during and post treatment, and reports. To oversee input of relevant data into the collections management system (including condition reports and conservation treatment reports), compiling statistics for internal reporting and ensuring accessibility following project completion.

To use expertise in assessing rare book material for exhibition, making recommendations for safe display and exercising creativity in providing solutions for display issues. To assist in exhibition installation.

To contribute expert knowledge in the development and management of all ASC collections care-related policies, and programmes. Keep abreast of current developments within the field of paper and book conservation and maintain CPD.

To oversee and supervise the work of conservation volunteers and work placement students, as directed by the Conservation and Preservation Manager.

To promote the teaching and research value of the Hunterian Library and encourage scholarly use of the collection, within the University and in the wider academic and public community, by contributing to various student engagement and public outreach activities (such as talks, production of blogs and other social media).

Any other duties appropriate with the grade of the post, as required.

Standard Terms & Conditions

Salary will be on the Management, Professional and Administrative Grade, level 6, £28,098-£31,604 per annum.

This post is full time (35 hours p/w: 09.00 – 17.00 Mon-Fri) and fixed term for 1 year.

New entrants to the University will be required to serve a probationary period of 6 months.

The successful applicant will be eligible to join the Universities’ Superannuation Scheme. Further information regarding the scheme is available from the Superannuation Officer, who is also prepared to advise on questions relating to the transfer of Superannuation benefits.
