We have an exciting opportunity for an NMR Spectroscopist to join Technology, development and infrastructure within the NIBSC division.

A centre of the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, The National Institute for Biological Standards and Control (NIBSC) is a global leader in the characterisation, standardisation and control of biological medicines. NIBSC plays a major role in assuring the quality of biological medicines worldwide through the provision of biological reference materials, by testing products and carrying out research. Our expert scientists also provide advice on a routine basis and in response to emergencies.

Purpose of the role:

The principal duty of the NMR spectroscopist will be to provide control work on bacterial polysaccharides used in vaccine production (Hib, MenC, pneumococcal, typhoid etc.) to the ISO17025 standard within UKAS accreditation. The job holder will prepare and run NMR samples, be able to manipulate the resultant spectra within the Bruker TopSpin software and interpret the data to characterise novel products. The operator should be able to successfully trouble shoot any problems, and provide support for development of standards in this area. The job holder will offer support for colleagues in other departments requiring NMR analysis (e.g. Biotherapeutics and Bacteriology). Implementation of novel pulse sequences and experiments will be undertaken as required to extend the capability of the instrument.

Qualifications, Licenses and professional memberships:

  • Educated to a doctoral level in biological sciences or related discipline, or equivalent qualifications or relevant work experience
