About Us

The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is one of Europe’s largest science research organisations. We’re trusted to support, enable and undertake pioneering projects in an amazing diversity of fields. Through world-class facilities and people, we’re driving ground-breaking advances in science and technology.

STFC’s Accelerator Science and Technology Centre (ASTeC) studies all aspects of the science and technology of charged particle accelerators, ranging from large scale international and national research facilities through to specialised industrial and medical applications.

About The Role

The STFC ASTeC and Technology Departments (TD) at Daresbury Laboratory have agreed to combine their respective vacuum science and technology delivery functions to form a single new group to address the development, design and delivery of vacuum systems and their operational support. This group will encompass the existing teams and researchers from TD in vacuum processing and cleaning together with the staff within the ASTeC vacuum science group.

We now have an excellent new opportunity for a talented and experienced Vacuum and Materials Science expert to take up the role of Group Leader for this new group, based within our ASTeC Department.

You will provide expert leadership to integrate the specialist vacuum science and technology capabilities, with a priority to strengthen the national and international significance of the programmes delivered at Daresbury. Over the next 5-10 years, the Compact Linear Accelerator for Research and Applications (CLARA) and UK X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL) projects are of primary importance in order to develop and demonstrate the necessary vacuum solutions for a future large-scale national facility. In addition, over the next 3-5 years, the European Extreme Light Infrastructure for Nuclear Physics (ELI-NP) and European Spallation Source (ESS) technology delivery projects will require extensive vacuum expertise and support.

You will develop a strategy, balancing core funded developments and delivery with an optimised level of externally funded research projects and business development opportunities, including appropriately utilising or sharing of capital infrastructure within the portfolio of responsibility to reduce core cost.

You will manage and coordinate a broad spectrum of vacuum activities, liaising between researchers in different laboratories and reporting upon research investigations and working with senior representatives and collaborative teams from STFC, Universities and Industries in order to maximise effectiveness, efficiency and impact of the programme delivery, including:

  • Research and development - conducting the underpinning R&D required to deliver the vacuum systems required. Providing the necessary vacuum-focused underpinning accelerator R&D for CLARA and for a future UK XFEL
  • Management – managing a team of researchers, scientists, engineers and technicians
  • Vacuum system design
  • Operational support
  • Industrial development.

About You

You will be educated to PhD level, or demonstrate equivalent experience.

You will be experienced in managing multi-disciplinary scientific or technology teams, with extensive experience of vacuum science and technologies, or a closely related area of material science. This experience will include vacuum system design and delivery, solving complex vacuum system problems and experience in managing large scale vacuum system operations.

You will have significant experience in development and delivery of science and technology system designs and an ability to apply that experience effectively to the leadership and management of projects delivering vacuum science, materials and technology programs. You will demonstrate project management experience, including managing large scale technical projects.

You will also display experience of UHV/XHV and low particulate environments, along with a good understanding of operating within a quality management system.

You will have strong leadership capabilities to direct and motivate a team, to implement change effectively and to provide leadership for the future directions of research.

You will demonstrate the ability to pursue and investigate new opportunities for external funding to support research and facility operations and widen and deepen STFC’s science and technology impact.

You will display excellent communication and interpersonal skills to liaise with a wide range of colleagues and stakeholders.

Benefits

An exceptional index linked pension scheme, 30 days leave allowance and flexible working are offered. A relocation allowance may also be available where applicable.

Full details of offered benefits can be found on STFC’s careers pages.
