Scion specialises in research, science and technology development for the forestry industry, wood products and wood-derived materials. We lead new technology development for renewables, bioproducts and energy and the establishment of a broader based bio-economy.

An exciting opportunity is now available for a forest scientist to join the Land Use Economics and Climate team at our Rotorua campus. The successful candidate will undertake research into the role of exotic and indigenous trees and forests for carbon sequestration and its quantification at different spatial scales.

You will be part of a high-performing team delivering high quality science with a strong focus on excellence and impact. You will contribute to Scion's on-going research into ecosystem level carbon flow and its estimation based on forest inventories and field experiments and improving New Zealand's reporting and policy framework related to forest based carbon sequestration. You will build strong and enduring relationships with key customers, end-users, regulatory bodies, stakeholder communities, Iwi and international audiences to ensure research findings are adopted by end-users and stakeholders.

We are looking for someone who has:

  • A strong ability to plan and execute field based research to gather high quality data for evidence based research.
  • A PhD Degree in Forestry Science, Forest Ecology, biogeochemistry or other appropriate discipline
  • A demonstrated interest in forestry in general, with a background in measurement and assessment of soil C stocks and flows (biogeochemistry), inventory methods, biomass estimation, allometric modelling and field based ecology focused sampling methods
  • An understanding of plantation forestry / silviculture with exotic tree species and some pre-existing basic knowledge of indigenous forestry.
  • Good knowledge in the use of spatially-explicit carbon inventories and flows into decision and policy making.
  • An ability to operate in physically challenging terrain for field work
