Do you want to be a part of a team that are implementing projects like the Manawatū River Accord, the Lake Horowhenua Accord and numerous other environmental initiatives to improve water quality of the Manawatū/ Whanganui regions rivers and lakes?

The Horizons Region extends over 22,200km2 – from Ruapehu in the north and Horowhenua in the south, to Whanganui in the west and Tararua in the east. It’s a landscape as vast and varied as the over 240,000 people who call it home.

Due to further investment by Council through the Long Term Plan we are looking for a Freshwater Advisor. This permanent position, based in Woodville, is focused on delivering programmes, which result in water quality improvements and engage the community in the process. This role is part of a high performing team, which work closely with a wide range of stakeholders across the region.

In this largely field based position you will work with land owners and key stakeholders to implement a range of projects all designed to result in water quality improvement. Projects will include stream fencing, aquatic habitat restoration and support to community led projects. The successful applicant will have a strong empathy with the rural community; have excellent communication and relationship building skills with the responsibility and delegation to deliver projects on the ground. 

To undertake this work a working knowledge of water quality issues and solutions as well as practical skills around establishing riparian plantings, fish passage solutions etc. is desirable. Candidates should hold a suitable Bachelor degree or have relevant experience. A proven track record of working with farmers, iwi, and community groups is desirable. A full drivers’ license is essential and experience with four wheel drive vehicles and the use of GIS is preferred. Good interpersonal, communication and organisational skills are essential.
