We’re looking for a talented and enthusiastic junior software engineer to work on a range of software projects and technologies which will form a crucial part of New Zealand defending the America’s Cup in 2021. Software is a massive part of our design effort: we write the software that our yachts are designed and optimised with; the software that we view sailing data with, and the software that drives the complex systems on the yacht itself.

You will be working with Emirates Team New Zealand’s design team, an extremely talented group of around 25 engineers across many disciplines: naval architecture, structural engineering, mechatronics, simulation and software. We are a team, not a company, and this isn’t a typical nine-to-five… you will need to be committed and hard-working, and the rewards in seeing your work contribute to sailing success will give you job satisfaction you won’t find elsewhere.

You will be exposed to wide range of software and technologies, and benefit from the experience of an existing small team of very skilled developers. Despite being a small group with a unique focus, we are serious about software development; we are keen to use the latest technologies, and we follow good development practices.

The role:

• Develop user interfaces, primarily in Javascript and React, for viewing sailing data and interacting with simulation software.
• Interface GUIs to existing C++ applications using web communication technologies.
• Develop shore side database management tools.
• Create display screens for sailors on the yacht.
• Develop simulation graphics in OpenGL.
• Adapt as required through the campaign!

What we’re looking for:

• A recent graduate, with up to 3 years work experience: this is a junior role.
• Talent and commitment.
• Ability to work and communicate well within a team, but not need 24-7 supervision.
• Experience in at least some of the above technologies; in particular, React.
• Proof of completing self-driven projects: can you show us open source or personal projects you’ve worked on?
• A good degree in software engineering or similar subject.
• NZ citizen or existing work permit.
• Someone who can start within August.
