About AphasiaNZ
The Aphasia New Zealand (AphasiaNZ) Charitable Trust is a New Zealand-wide charity providing support services, resources and information to people with aphasia acquired after stroke, brain injury and brain tumour/disease. We support and educate family members, spouses and carers of people with aphasia too and offer group and individualised support.
Aphasia affects a person's speech and language and is caused by damage to the language area of the brain. Speaking, reading, writing, participating in conversations and performing calculations can all be affected.
Aphasia is more common than Parkinson's disease, Cerebral Palsy and Muscular Dystrophy and every day in New Zealand, 7 people acquire it from stroke alone.
About the CAA role
Our Community Aphasia Advisors (CAAs) provide resources and information to those new to aphasia, as well as facilitate local AphasiaNZ groups and activities and educate our communities, increasing knowledge and raising awareness of the nature and effects of aphasia.
We are looking for someone to work part-time for approximately 8 hours a week focusing on the Waikato West and Central communities. We need someone with:
- A knowledge of the nature and effects of communication impairments, specifically aphasia
- An understanding of services available in the Waikato communities for people affected by disabilities
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Good attention to detail
- Excellent computer skills - Word, DropBox, Google Docs etc.
- Enthusiasm and flexibility
- Their own car and full clean license
Skills and experience required
If you are an SLT (Speech-language Therapist) or related health professional looking for flexible, part-time contract work and an opportunity to use your skills to make a positive difference to the lives of those living with aphasia in the Waikato area, you would be suited to the role. While this is not a SLT role (AphasiaNZ does not provide therapy, or therapeutic interventions) it is suited to someone with a SLT background, and someone with a passion for empowering people to communicate and participate in our communities.
Email [email protected] for more information. Go to our website www.aphasia.org.nz to find out about the work we do throughout NZ for people with and affected by aphasia.
