Oranga Tamariki—Ministry for Children is dedicated to supporting any child in New Zealand whose wellbeing is at significant risk of harm now, or in the future, and we're passionate about it.

We're looking for a part time Youth Justice Coordinator to join us and provide support services to our Youth Justice team based in Taumarunui.  Although based in Taumarunui, the Youth Justice Coordinator will be a part of the Whanganui Youth Justice team who will provide necessary support, led by the Youth Justice Manager.

Our Youth Justice Coordinators are the key people who bring together children and young people, their whānau, victims, Police, youth advocates and essential support services to address the child or young person’s offending behaviour and any underlying issues.  

This is a senior role working at our Taumarunui Site as a member of the Whanganui Youth Justice team. The Youth Justice Coordinator will work alongside Social Workers, police, schools, health professionals and community partners and agencies. With that in mind - this role is defined in law and has responsibilities to convene and hold Restorative Justice Family Group Conferences bringing those people together.  An effective Youth Justice Coordinator is organised, methodical and a great communicator and facilitator.  You will be well networked within the wider community and demonstrate a solution focused way of interacting with a range of stakeholders. You will be self-motivated, able to work independently and as part of a team and also be prepared to work outside the 9-5 routine. Excellent written communication and PC skills are required as writing plans and case note recording are a key component of this position.

To be successful in this role you must be:

  • highly organised, methodical and solutions focused
  • a strong facilitator with proven negotiation skills
  • good at communicating information in a clear, easy to understand way to a diverse audience
  • able to understand law and work within its boundaries
  • flexible in your approach, outside of hours conferences may be required to meet stakeholder needs
  • computer literate with the ability to write court reports and other notes
  • able to drive distances and hold a full clean driver's licence.
