The Health and Safety Advisor role is a key component of VisionWest’s commitment to look after the safety and well-being of their staff and volunteers.

 

This role will be responsible for imbedding a sound and workable health and safety system within the organisation that keeps staff safe and meets the relevant safety legislation. This is a newly established role and comes with the opportunity to take what is already in place, improve and build upon it. Responsibilities include planning, auditing, monitoring, educating, training, coordinating and aligning H&S initiatives and committees across all VisionWest branches and service centres located in various regions of New Zealand.

A high level of organising skills with the ability to develop and implement procedure and bring staff along on the journey is key to this role. Therefore, we will consider applicants with transferable skills as well as those with Health and Safety qualifications and experience. Of high importance for this role is being able to quickly grasp a thorough understanding of our not for profit community organisation as well being a great fit for our team.

 This position reports to the the Head of People and Culture and has the assistance of an Administrator. It will at times involve travel outside of Auckland. Hours are negotiable at 32 to 40 hours for the right person.

 Responsibilities will include:

  • Develop, implement and review H&S plans, processes and procedures
  • Proactively promote Health and Safety at VisionWest as well as coaching, inspiring and engaging to improve the Health & Safety culture throughout the organisation
  • Monitoring compliance with Health & Safety Legislation
  • Providing clear and accurate reporting of the current Health & Safety situation to management and the Trust Board

Key skills and experience:

  • Strategic planning, problem solving
  • Policy and procedure development, implementation and monitoring
  • An ability to engage with stakeholders to gain buy-in and ownership
  • Strong communication skills – written and verbal
  • Collation of data for system improvement and reporting

It is preferable that the applicant has:

  • H&S qualification
  • Previous experience in a H&S role and a strong understanding & knowledge of New Zealand Health & Safety Legislation
