Your role

An exciting opportunity exists for a Legal Counsel to provide support to the Wealth and Capital Markets’ Legal team by providing legal advisory support and services across the range of Wealth and Capital Markets businesses in all relevant areas including:

  • Property and construction law
  • Funds management and financial services
  • Wealth Management – Advice
  • Trustee Companies – trusts, estates, charities and guardianship matters
  • Corporate law
  • Mutuals and Insurance company products and services – financial investments
  • Banking and Finance – borrower side
  • Mortgage fund lending
  • Mergers and Acquisitions
  • Disputes and Litigation
  • Contracts and transactional work
  • Regulatory compliance and liaison work
  • Privacy issues.

The incumbent will be required to:

  • Provide high quality, independent minded, commercial legal advice and support on a wide range of matters affecting the Wealth business by balancing the legal risks with the commercial and strategic drivers of the business.
  • Monitor and advise on legal risk and compliance components during due diligence on transactions/potential transactions
  • Develop, review and implement legal processes/templates which meet the requirements of the business.
  • Where required, provide independent legal advice that is consistent with maintaining legal professional privilege
  • Review, draft, finalise and manage agreements and manage transactions and contractual processes, in order to minimise legal risks and facilitate optimal business outcomes.
  • Recommend improvements to contract and agreement templates.
  • Assist the Product team in all facets of their processes relevant to the Legal function in collaboration with senior stakeholders and be a meaningful and productive contributor to the Product Teams’ activities and process.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with third parties including regulators and relevant industry bodies.
  • Interpret new and existing legislation and assist the business understand the impact of the legislation on business operations.
  • Assist the team in successfully delivering our service partnership model to the Wealth Platform and contributing more broadly to the Enablement Legal and Product team’s successful collaboration amongst its own members and across the Platform

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Tertiary qualifications in law.
  • Admission to practice as an Australian Legal Practitioner. 
  • Experience in a private practice or a corporate environment in the areas set out in the primary objective / expected outcomes section above.
  • Have a strong background in financial services law, wealth management, insurance  and corporate and commercial law, gained within a premium national firm and ideally with experience via a secondment to a financial services organisation or similar business;
  • Be able to draft contracts and other documentation for complex transactions as well as product disclosure and related documents, with a proven ability to identify risks and develop ways to manage them in a commercial and optimal way;
  • Have excellent legislative and contractual interpretation skills with a strong attention to detail;
  • Experience dealing with senior management and regulators.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Sound change management skills and experience.
  • Thrive on challenges and be comfortable dealing with complexity and giving advice in that context;
  • Be a team player with a strong work ethic and able to work well with and collaborate across all parts of the team and the business;
  • enjoy working in a fast paced environment and be comfortable dealing with and sorting out, difficult issues and challenges with your stakeholders;
