The Opportunity

We are looking for a highly experienced Java Web Developer (Full Stack – Support) who will be responsible for providing efficient 2nd line support for our existing web applications to all University students and staff members. You will be responsible for working with both frontend and backend technologies to ensure applications meet their requirements running on cloud platforms such as Google Cloud.

Your duties will include but not be limited to:

  • Provide 2nd line support to requests relating to web based applications
  • Provide specialist advice and guidance on how to achieve special features effectively using web application development expertise
  • Build features and conduct tests ensuring high-quality functionality and user friendliness for end users
  • Monitor system logs and application performance and rectify any issues immediately in line with industry best practice standards

About You

To be successfully considered for this role you will have previous experience in a similar role where you have managed the frontend and backend development of web based applications, ideally within a University environment. You will have experience in Java, Spring, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, front-end libraries such as Angular/React/Vue.js, relational and NoSQL database design and demonstrable adherence to enterprise design patterns common in web applications such as MVC, REST, Service and Repository patterns. You will have strong verbal and written communication skills and pride yourself on delivering exceptional customer service in solving web based application issues, through the provision of technical solutions.

Technical Exercise

As part of your application for this role, you are required to complete a technical exercise for us to be able to get a feel for your approach to code and also give you the opportunity to showcase your skills. See below for further instructions:

What to do:

  • Use an online code tool such as Codepen or Plunkr to build a basic single page application that allows a user to search Flickr and see matching pictures
  • Use a JavaScript framework such as Angular, React or Vue.js plus any additional frameworks to support your application (such as Lodash, Bootstrap, etc.)
  • Demonstrate good understanding of CSS to show an appealing user interface
  • Show the search results in real time as the user types their query, including the following information:
    • the image
    • the author
    • the tags
    • link thumbnail to hi-res image which the user can view
  • Use the following Flickr public JSONP feed found here as the data source to perform searches against: https://www.flickr.com/services/feeds/docs/photos_public/
  • Make sure you include the link to the Project in your Cover letter, as part of your application for the role, so we can review your exercise when you’re done
